13. communicating information and understanding;

H13 uses terminology and reporting styles appropriately and successfully to communicate information and understanding;

14. developing scientific thinking and problem-solving;

H14 assesses the validity of conclusions from gathered data and information;

15. working individually and in teams;

H15 explains why an investigation is best undertaken individually or by a team;

Students will develop positive values about and attitudes towards:

16. themselves, others, learning as a lifelong process, chemistry and the environment.

H16 demonstrates and justifies their positive values about and attitude towards both the living and non-living components of the environment, ethical behaviour and a desire for critical evaluation of the consequences of the applications of science.

PRACTICAL PORTFOLIO CRITERIA

Practical Portfolio Assessment Criteria

The practical portfolio will be assessed on its completeness and on a sample of selected reports

Completeness – a mark out of 20 based on the relative number of satisfactorily completed laboratory reports contained in the portfolio on the final submission.

Selected Reports – a sample of six reports will be selected for assessment using the criteria given below

Laboratory Report Assessment

The mark recorded for each report will be total of the marks awarded for each section of the report. The marks allocated for each section are as follows

PRACTICAL PORTFOLIO

Weighting : 10% of course mark

First submission date – week 6 Term 1 2009

Final submission date – week 2 Term 3 2009

Outcomes that may be assessed

H11.     justifies the appropriateness of a particular investigation plan

H12.     evaluates ways in which accuracy and reliability could be improved in investigations

H13.     uses terminology and reporting styles appropriately and successfully to communicate information and understanding

H14.     assesses the validity of conclusions from gathered data and information

H15.     explains why an investigation is best undertaken individually or by a team

Task – Practical Portfolio

The HSC Chemistry Practical Portfolio must contain all of the Laboratory Reports that have been required to be completed during the course. While only selected lab reports (3 in term 1 and 3 in term 3) will be required to be submitted for marking to assess this Practical Portfolio, all reports are expected to be completed and available for submission. The teacher will inform students which reports are required and the date when they are to be submitted.

The entire practical portfolio will be required to be submitted in term 3 so that it can be assessed for overall completeness.

Assessment tasks are very important. You should only be absent or fail to submit an assessment task by the due date if you are sick or there has been an extreme family problem. You should have a doctor’s certificate for illness and/or a letter, presented to the principal, from a parent/caregiver for family reasons. Refer to the relevant section of the Year 12 assessment book for details of your obligations.

You must complete an Illness/Misadventure form for any task that is missed. Failure to do this will result in a ZERO MARK and a non-attempt being recorded

This is YOUR responsibility !
