Course Description:

In this course students explore and experiment with the ways that events, experiences, ideas and values are represented in and through texts.  Students analyse and evaluate the ways in which language forms and structures shape meaning. Students are provided with opportunities for imaginative and critical expression in their response to, and composition of, texts.

Preliminary English: Standard and Advanced

    Area of Study: Conflict  

Assessment Task 1: View and Represent (10%);   Speaking (15%)

Outcomes to be assessed: P1,2,3,4,6,7,8,11,13; B.H.S;1,2,3,5,6,7,

Presentation date: Friday March 13th 2009.

                                Time: 8 am - 3.00 p.m.

Your Area of Study this year is "Conflict".

In class you will have studied a number of concepts that emanate from this Area of Study. Determine concepts that you think are illustrated in the Area of Study and are exemplified in two poems from the set text collection of poems and a piece of related material of your own choosing (not another poem).

Task:

Section1:   Take the concepts and through illustration represent both the concepts and the language of the poems and the related material graphically.

Section 2:   Present a speech that firstly briefly explains the Visual Representation's construction, secondly explains and assesses the concepts and language of the three texts and thirdly evaluates the composer's success in his/her  presentation of "Conflict."

Explanation:

Section1: Represent the concepts and language of the poems and the related material graphically.

This graphic representation may be composed in any of a range of possible styles. Suggestions include:

Power point presentation

Section2: Prepare and deliver a speech

Instructions for completion of both sections of the task:

1. Your graphic representation is to be the focus for a spoken presentation. 

2.  In this presentation you should show your representation and briefly explain the reasons behind its construction. 

3. You should also explain and assess the concepts and explain and assess the use of language in the two poems you have chosen as well as the related piece of your own choosing.

4. You should explain the ways that these have been illustrated in your representation.

5.  You should evaluate the composer's success in his/her presentation of "Conflict".

Time: 4-5 minutes

Please note: Any student who does not present a speech on the set date will not receive a mark for this task unless they have a Doctor's Certificate for illness or certification to cover serious misadventure.

You will be assessed on:

1. The level of the sophistication of the representation of concepts, and the composer's language in the graphic

 2. The level of sophistication of the content of the speech 

 3. The level of sophistication of the delivery of the speech
