Some repetition or inconsistent application. Little discrimination or moderation, limited respect for conditions set by the selection of materials and limitations including course prescriptions

11–20

• Demonstrates a simplistic, immediate articulation of idea/concept. Meanings register in banal ways. References are limited, driven by the image • Displays neither technical accomplishment nor moderation. Unsubtle, unrefined, incongruous, superficial. Use the information below to structure your research and investigation.

a. Artmaking practice:

The practice of an artist can be defined in general terms as the artist’s approach or intention – the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of their artmaking. When investigating an artist’s practice, much can be gained from the artist’s own published statements. (Try to include a short, relevant quote regarding the artist’s work by the artist or an art critic.)

Include information on:

the artist’s use of materials, techniques and technologies

the development of a recognisable style, treatment of subject matter and selection of genre, possible connection to an art movement

the development of the artist’s ideas and concepts

b. Structural frame:

The frames are used to investigate, explain and evaluate artworks. You are to critically analyse TWO ARTWORKS by the artist using the Structural Frame.

Include the following:

the title, date, size of the artwork

an image of the artwork

describe the artwork – What is it of? How was it made? What materials and techniques have been used in this specific work? Comment on the composition and what the work looks like.

The artist’s use of the visual elements – line, colour, tone, size, texture and shape – to communicate the artist’s intention

the use of signs and symbols to communicate the artist’s interests and beliefs

c. Conceptual Framework:

The conceptual framework concerns the roles and relationships between the artist, artwork, audience and world. Comment on the following:

the artist’s response to the world, events and/or issues as evidenced in their artwork

the audience response & interaction with the artwork. Who sees this work & where?
