Additional Entry Requirements
There are a number of university courses such as Medicine and Dentistry which have additional entry requirements such as the STAT and UMAT exams.
UMAT - Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test
HYPERLINK "http://www.uac.edu.au/uac/umat.html" http://www.uac.edu.au/uac/umat.html. Or HYPERLINK "http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/" http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/.
The Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT) has been developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) on behalf of the UMAT Consortium universities.
UMAT is used specifically to assist in the selection of students into medicine and some health science degree programs at undergraduate level. The 2.5 hours test assess general attributes and skills gained through prior experience and learning, such as critical thinking and problem solving, interactions with others, and abstract non-verbal reasoning. It does not measure academic knowledge.
Registrations for UMAT2009 will open in April 2009
STAT - HYPERLINK "http://www.acer.edu.au/stat/" http://www.acer.edu.au/stat/. or HYPERLINK "http://www.uac.edu.au/stat/" http://www.uac.edu.au/stat/.
The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is an alternative tertiary admissions test for those candidates who do not have a recent Year 12 certificate. It is also used by some specialist courses as a further entry selection criterion. The multiple-choice tests have 70 items. There is also a one-hour Written English test. Scores are reported on a STAT scale from 100-200.
STAT forms are constructed so that scores can be accurately compared across the series and over time. STAT is administered through the tertiary admissions centers in each State.
Registrations will re-open in March 2009 for mid-year intake sittings in June 2009.
Deferring University Courses
You may apply to defer your offer for up to one year from the commencement date on your original letter of offer. If your offer letter shows two commencement dates, you may defer for up to one year from the first commencement date.
If you wish to defer for more than one year, you will need to re-apply for admission. Your application will then be re-assessed for entry in the new semester/year of study.
Please note that not all university courses are eligible to be deferred, make sure you check the UAC guide carefully when considering deferring your offer.
Alternative Entry to University
You didn’t receive the UAI required to be offered a place in the university course you applied for or you didn’t qualify for a UAI when completing your HSC?
Don’t worry there are many alternative pathways into university, these include:
Articulation from TAFE or Private College courses. Generally Universities give exemptions based on whether a TAFE Diploma or Advanced Diploma course has been completed (that is, an Australian Qualification Framework TAFE course that requires 2-3 years of full-time study). The level of subject exemption normally depends on the grade point average of the subjects in the completed TAFE or College course.
Mature age entry. If you are 20 years of age or older you may qualify as a mature age student. Mature age itself is not enough to gain entry to University, and your application will depend on your previous qualifications and may include consideration of work experience and motivation to study.
University preparation courses.
